The EPU was the star of the show earlier this year when it hosted the Western Canadian Conference on Environmental Ergonomics and Physiology. The conference brought together internationally renowned researchers and industry partners to discuss the effects of extreme environments on human performance in athletics and work situations. Speakers included Phil Nuytten of Nuytco Research in North Vancouver, who invented the NEWTSUIT, which can be worn to depths of 600 feet without a need for decompression. Nuytco Research is making advances in submersible suit and one-person submarine technology for deep-sea diving. Andrej Romanovsky of St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix, spoke on human temperature regulation, focusing on how fever and hypothermia can cause widespread inflammation. The conference included tours of the EPU facilities as well as a poster session for students to present their research.
